位于法租界内的爱丁堡大学在校园东南角掘井时挖出两具尸骸。巡捕房陈探长闻讯带着儿子天生出现在现场。根据尸骸构架，天生初步推断死者是一双男女；在对尸骸现场处找到的手表、耳环、戒指进行鉴定时，法医韩玲惊骇而痛苦的发现，死者中的女性竟然是自己十年前突然失踪的妈妈宋敏，另一名男性死者应该是妈妈的同事梁仲平。 奇巧而惊骇的发现让韩玲陷入痛苦的回忆：十年前的1921年12月17日，妈妈和同事梁仲平去北京出差，从此杳无音信。从韩玲的回忆中寻找蛛丝马迹，陈探长和儿子天生前来拜访梁仲平的遗孀周心美。自从丈夫梁仲平失踪后，学校安排周心美带着精神有些异常的儿子梁远负责管理学校图书馆。 拜访周心美，天生除了得知宋敏、梁仲平、王世杰十年前作为学校三名教授师从于宋敏的丈夫韩达仁、长期从事科学研究以外，还发现精神异常的梁远对数字特别敏感，尤其是不自主地念叨的诸如1921 1217 1428数字，引起天生的注意。天生对梁远的故意刺激，从梁远的嘴里发现学校唐校长与十年前宋敏和梁仲平遇害一案有关。 陈探长调查唐校长，天生侧面接触已经远离学术界、如今沦为酒鬼的王世杰，从王世杰的回忆中得知韩达仁因病去世后不久梁仲平就对宋敏心生爱慕，好色的唐校长因打宋敏的主意和梁仲平数次发生冲突。然而，结果却证实王世杰和唐校长都不是谋杀的凶手。消除了对王世杰和唐校长的怀疑，目标直逼周心美。 王世杰的回忆，表明周心美确实产生过毒死宋敏和丈夫梁仲平的迹象。此时，周心美的追忆、梁远失神时对数字的异常反应，将“凶手”锁定在梁远身上。曾经拿注射过毒剂的夹心糖毒死耗子的梁远被巡捕房拘捕。案情看似了结，天生却感觉另有隐情。果然，王世杰的供词让天生重新回到周心美身上。 在儿子梁远一再念叨的几串数字中，周心美终于说出事情的真相：十年前，梁仲平因爱慕宋敏而遭拒绝，在宋敏决定远赴德国的那天，也就是1921年12月17日14时28分，梁仲平拿儿子注射过毒剂的夹心糖致宋敏死亡，然后自己殉情自杀。那一幕，成了梁远永远而痛苦的记忆。案情真相大白，韩玲推开纱窗，任凭阳光撒满流淌着泪水的脸。
